Certain pairs of words are commonly confused by the person learning Spanish. A common pair of such Spanish words are the words gastar and pasar.

Both these words mean to spend in Spanish.

Gastar means to spend in the sense of spending money or expenses such as office expenditure, business expenses on a trip and such like.

Pasar is slightly different in that it means to spend time, as in to pass the time.

Another word in Spanish for ’spend’ is agotar which means to exhaust as in a hurricane spends its force for example.
